 STATEMENT 

Shohei Fujimoto (b. 1989, Japan) takes perception itself as his subject, creating situations that are elemental and abstract, prior to being named in words. Into them, he introduces something unpredictable, something wild.

The field built from that wildness neither closes into repetition nor scatters into chaos. It keeps trembling, almost legible yet never quite resolving, and holds the viewer's attention. As one might gaze endlessly at a natural phenomenon, within a movement that slips away the moment you try to grasp it, the inner sense of time gently comes undone.

Fujimoto works by moving back and forth between the digital and the physical. Though the mechanism is controlled, in real space it quivers as if alive. At the core of his practice is this pseudo-autonomy. The thing itself is not autonomous. And yet, within the controlled mechanism, the viewer cannot help sensing something organic.

But Fujimoto never lets the senses be filled to saturation. Rather than overwhelming with sound, light, or information until perception goes numb, he deliberately sets aside a place where there is nothing. It is this room to breathe that keeps the viewer from remaining a mere receiver, letting them touch the situation through their own perception.

What is touched there is not life itself, but a sense that precedes words, one held in common by all people. Just as the marks left by those who lived before language still move us across the distance of time, it comes close to the working of a sensory faculty that every person is born with, beyond culture and language.

Within a singular physical presence that cannot be experienced without being there, Fujimoto's work makes ready the moment when that sense is awakened. The viewer is not given something for the first time, but re-encounters the very sense that was already within them.
